About us
The Mansfield Woodhouse Millennium Green Trust
How did we get here?
The Trust was formed in 1998 to acquire a tract of privately owned land at the centre of the village, which is now known as the Millennium Green. The Mansfield Woodhouse Millennium Green was purchased with a Big Lottery Fund grant in 2000 as a green space in an increasingly urban landscape. For 10 years it flourished, but eventually key people died or became too infirm to continue. The Green became neglected becoming an eyesore and a location for anti-social behaviour. In 2013, a group of like-minded community members re-invigorated the Trust and set about making the Green a community asset. With a small group of volunteers, they reinstated paths, repaired and re-sited seats, laid hedges and built a new gateway.
Objectives
The Trust's charitable objectives are to provide and maintain an open space for the benefit of the inhabitants and to be used forever as an area for:
The Team
Our Patron Sir Alan Meale
Our Trustees Bob Thacker
Andrew Riby
Councillor Joyce Bosnjak
Martin Lee
New blood required
Currently, the Trust is at a cross-roads; a number of key people in the Trustee Group are looking to retire by 2025 and therefore we are in the process of finding people to take their place and help lead the Trust into the future. We are looking for people who are not afraid to get their sleeves rolled up & do the practical work, have a strong commitment to nature conservation, and are prepared to provide leadership by joining the Trustee Group.
If we can’t find new blood the fear is that the Green will lose the variety of habitat it enjoys and will eventually deteriorate to bramble scrub, covered in urban rubbish and a centre for anti-social behaviour. On the other hand if enough people believe that the Green is an asset and a resource worth keeping we need to hear from you and together we need to act now. We have a maximum of two years to set the Millennium Green on a secure course for the next decade and beyond. The Choice is Ours.
If you like the idea of being part of the Green’s team of Volunteers, but are not sure whether you want the commitment of being a Trustee, you would be very welcome to come along, talk to us & explore other possibilities of how you could help.
What do we do?
The trustees and volunteers work hard to maintain the Green, to promote its interests, those of its inhabitants, flora and fauna and its human visitors. They also aim to improve the community’s understanding of wildlife to be found on the Green.
Recent and ongoing projects include the creation of a wildlife flower meadow, a community orchard, re-homing rescued hedgehogs and a bird feeding project.
